We seek to provide for all of the children's needs. This includes meeting their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Life Savers Center Orphanage identifies children in a direct manner. We identify homeless children living on the streets of Haiti. People also bring children directly to LSCO. In both cases, LSCO requires the child’s birth certificate and the guardian’s signature on a document, formally assenting to the child’s admission to the orphanage.
Admitted orphans are not discriminated on socioeconomic, financial, racial, or religious background. The help offered to orphaned children at LSCO is unconditional. Any orphan in need of a home is taken in, provided space and funding is maneuvered to provide high-quality care.
Without additional funding, LSCO does not currently have the capacity to house more children.
The new house for the children was completed in 2020 thanks to Jacques's sacrificial work and several generous donors.
Every child attends school, given that they are old enough to do so. The children learn seven subjects, including reading, math, and French grammar. The Fort-Jacques School ranges grades one through twelve. Four official exams, sanctioned by the state, are given to these kids as they transition between years. All of the children at LSCO have regularly passed these exams.
Each orphan at LSCO is provided with a warm bed and nutritious meals. They are offered a balanced diet similar to typical American food which consists of corn, oatmeal, meat, and vegetables.
The children are treated for a range of medical needs – from common ailments such as coughs, colds and fevers to more acute cases of malnutrition and chronic illnesses. As a medical problem arises, the LSCO staff takes the ill child to a local clinic to be seen by a physician.
Bible education and Christian teachings are consistently incorporated into the children’s education. They are also required to pray twice every day, morning and evening. The children attend church every Sunday as well. The weekly religious service and Sunday school teaches the LSCO orphans about Christianity and the teachings of Jesus Christ from a young age. Christian principles are ingrained in them from a young age. The LSCO orphans also learn Christian hymns and songs.
We assist the children in gaining the skills needed to leave the orphanage after high school and become independent and responsible adults.
The LSCO orphans regularly attend school and perform well on Haitian standardized exams. Currently, the age range of the LSCO orphans is two to fourteen years old. Our goal is for these children to attend and graduate high school. We hope that they will then move on to higher education, either college or vocational training.
When I was a child of 7 years old, my mother used to take me to school. One morning I decided to ask her why she brought food or money for the kids begging on the street. Her answer was: They do not have a mom or dad to care for them. Even as a little boy, I was passionate about caring for the children as my heart ached for them. I said to myself, when I become a man I will help these children. After I graduated high school, I went to college and earned a degree in civil engineering. I started earning money. I put some money aside to start my vision, which was to help children.
I started a business that would be the primary source of income to help the kids that would be in the orphanage. The orphanage officially started in September 2008 with 32 children. However, it was not enough to help the kids with their physical needs. I also wanted to help them spiritually. So, I decided to go to seminary get a degree in pastoral ministry.
While I was studying in Kansas Christian College, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. All we had for the children was destroyed by the massive earthquake. Since then, we have been trying to rebuild, but are in lack of resources to build a home. We have struggled to help the kids regularly with food, clothes, education, health, etc. Though the massive earthquake destroyed everything, the kids are still smiling through it all.
Our mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of social economic background and family conditions, are offered the opportunity to realize their God-given potential. James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” With God as our source of hope, we place the orphanage and all of its children and ministry in His hands. We trust that our story will touch your heart and inspire you to help others and make an impact in the lives of others.
